Enclosed Gear Lubrication
Ø Background
Gears are employed in all types of industries to transmit motion and power from one rotating shaft to another,from a rotating shaft to a reciprocating element. With respect to lubrication and the formation and maintenance of lubricating films, gears can be broadly classified as either enclosedopen and then further classified according to the following types:
The differences in action between the teeth of different types of gears and whethernot they are openenclosed will have a considerable influence on both the formation of lubricating films and the properties of the lubricants required for satisfactory lubrication. For the purposes of this Technical Information Sheet, we will discuss enclosed gear lubrication only. Open gear lubrication is addressed in our Technical Information Sheet titled "Open Gear Lubrication."
Ø Lubricant Characteristics for Enclosed Gears
The necessary characteristics of lubricants for enclosed gears may be summarized as follows:
1.Correct viscosity at operating temperature to assure distribution of oil to all rubbing surfaces and formation of protective oil films at prevailing speeds and pressures.
2.Adequate low temperature fluidity to permit circulation at that lowest expected start temperature.
3.Good chemical stability to minimize oxidation under conditions of high temperature and agitation in the presence of air, and to provide long service life of the oil.
4.Good demulsibility to permit rapid separation of water and protect against the formation of harmful emulsions.
5. Anti-rust properties to protect gear and bearing surfaces from rusting in the presence of water, entrained moisture,humid atmospheres.
6. A non-corrosive nature to prevent gears and bearings from being subject to chemical attack by the lubricant.
7. Foam resistance to prevent excessive amounts of foam in reservoirs and gear cases during oil agitation.
Ø Lubricant Selection
As previously mentioned, enclosed gears can be found operating in varying industries, loads, temperatures, speeds and environments. ExxonMobil has a wide range of open gear lubricants from which to choose to best suit given conditions. The first place to look for the right lubricant is the OEM of the gears. They should, at a minimum, specify certain viscosities for operating given temperature ranges and application methods. The second source to seek help from is from is ExxonMobil's Technical Information Sheet titled "AGMA Guidelines for Gear Lubrication." Finally, consult your ExxonMobil lubrication engineer.
